The South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus is an award winning male voice choir based in Cardiff, South Wales. Our members hail from all over South Wales and come together in Cardiff for weekly rehearsals and post-rehearsal drinks. We are a friendly, lively and inclusive group who enjoy making music together and hold exciting and varied performances throughout the year, across the UK and beyond!

We have four sections: top tenors; second tenors; baritones; and basses. We have a great atmosphere, working hard to produce excellent choral music but with a lot of fun and laughter along the way.

How it all Began…

About SWGMC - Class of 2008
SWGMC Class of 2008

SWGMC launched with a splash in early 2008, founded by current musical director Andy Bulleyment. Our first Coming Out concert on home turf formed part of the Cardiff Pride Celebrations later the same year.

In the early days we worked on finding our voice and our place within Wales’ rich musical heritage. Our early audiences were keen to hear a new breed of male voice choir, and we didn’t disappoint! We sang at private events, in pubs, in churches, even on the street. We found that people wanted to hear us, people who had forgotten the wonderful sound of male voices singing in harmony, or people who hadn’t even heard a male voice choir sing before. As we became known through word of mouth, more and more men with a passion for singing came along to our rehearsals and we also had a surge in enquiries from people looking to hire us to sing at their events.

Nowadays we are a chorus of around thirty five regular members and we all look forward to our busy schedule of performances throughout the year. These include our own regular concerts in Cardiff but also performances alongside other choirs, including our London friends the Pink Singers, and in festivals including the Cornwall International Male Voice Festival in 2013, and the Various Voices Choral Festival in Dublin in 2014.

In May 2017 we returned to the Cornwall International Male Voice Festival to compete in their biennial competition and enjoyed a clean sweep, taking home the best Small Choir trophy and the prize for best single piece of music. We were also crowned overall Festival Champions! Read more about our brilliant Cornish weekend here.

In July 2018, we celebrated ten years as a choir, performing some of our favourite songs to a wonderful audience of friends, new and old, at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff.

In April 2019, we performed a selection of songs under the theme of PRIDE. Beginning in 1920s Germany with The Lavender Song, we explored some of the key themes running through the history of pride, and some wonderful, protesting and celebratory music along the way.

We feel that we’ve found our niche within the strong Welsh heritage of male-voice choirs and we are proud to be playing an active role in the local community through our performances and our charitable fundraising. At the heart of the chorus is a passion for music, for expression, for fun and for connecting with our friends in South Wales and across the globe, and we’re delighted to report that these passions have carried on well into the Chorus’s eleventh year, and hopefully beyond…
